Istilah POP3, IMAP & SMTP sering terdengar ketika melakukan seting mail client baik di PC Desktop atau SmartPhone, bahakan saat ini HP dengan harga yang tidak begitu mahal pun sudah dilengkapi dengan fasilitas email. Namun tahukah apa itu yang dimaksud dengan POP3, IMAP & SMTP ? Dalam tulisan kali ini saya akan mencoba menjabarkan apa arti 3 istilah diatas. POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) adalah protokol yang digunakan untuk mengambil surat elektronik (email) dari server email. Protokol POP3 dibuat karena desain dari sistem surat elektronik yang mengharuskan adanya server surat elektronik yang menampung surat eletronik untuk sementara sampai surat elektronik tersebut diambil oleh penerima yang berhak IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) adalah protokol standar untuk mengakses/mengambil e-mail dari server. Server adalah tempat dimana email ditampung dari berbagai pengirim. Dalam server terdapat mailbox yang memiliki alamat yang unik dari pemiliknya. Mailbox tersebut memiliki quota space yang diset oleh administrator email server tersebut. Untuk mengakses mailbox tersebut dibutuhkan autentikasi akses dengan menggunakan username dan password, atau yang biasa disebut mail account.
